Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford's love for acting grew in her early years. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that the school was not suitable for her. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. During the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
